Rafa, a teenage boy in South Sudan, volunteers with young children displaced from the persistent conflict (Andrew Ash/Jesuit Refugee Service).

Maban, 11 March 2016 – Jomo and Rafa are teenagers growing up in a war zone. Unlike many South Sudanese their age, they have been fortunate to receive education at home in Maban. As leaders of Bakhatis, a South Sudanese youth group, they spread their knowledge to young children by volunteering as teachers with internally displaced children at a JRS nursery school. With the help of the Bakhatis youth group, JRS provides basic early childhood education for young children along with supplemental nutritional support to young children living in an informal settlement.
