Christmas Greetings!
21 December 2018

On the occasion of the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees which was celebrated on 14th January 2018, Pope Francis reminded us that “[e]very stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ”. These words are an invitation to a “personal encounter” with the forcibly displaced persons, which allows for “greater quality of service”. To us within the JRS family, this translates into accompaniment upon which our service is anchored. Our service would be bereft of meaning if we did not share the journeys of those we serve, if we did not create room for them in our lives, in our hearts, and indeed in our respective countries.

This Christmas season presents us once again with a golden opportunity to welcome the infant Jesus in our lives, who also took shelter in Egypt. As there was no room in the inn, he was born homeless, thus embracing the plight of all those without a place to call home. Every moment we spend at the service of our forcibly displaced brothers and sisters is, therefore, a moment of grace, a Christmas moment.  This is how to live the meaning of Emmanuel—God is with us. Let us be with our less fortunate brothers and sisters who are displaced or have forcibly left their home countries.

In this joyous season, may we be as blessed as those shepherds of Bethlehem who hear the angelic chorus heralding the birth of Emmanuel, God in our midst. Let us give thanks for all that God has done for us through the mission of JRS over the past year. Let us pray that compassion, peace, justice and hope will prevail over hatred, fear and exclusion.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all.
